Upgrade to WordPress 2.5.1 but 2.5.2 Will Be Out Soon

WordPress 2.5.1 was released today and normally, I would be writing about this sort of thing on Blogging Pro, but the site has been down all day.

The new release includes some bug fixes, and a major security update. Here are some highlights:

  • Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.
  • Better performance for those who have many categories
  • Media Uploader fixes
  • An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7
  • Widget Administration fixes
  • Various usability improvements
  • Layout fixes for IE

Usually, this is where I tell everyone that has held off on upgrading from WordPress 2.3.3 to go ahead, but you might just want to wait a bit longer as I just got a message on Twitter from Mark Jaquith regarding the WordPress 2.5.1 release. He says, and I quote:

2.5.2 will probably be out before too long (password resetting was broken by 2.5.1 — doh).

So before you go run off and upgrade to 2.5.1 to protect yourself from whatever the security issue of the week is, understand that in a short amount of time, you might be upgrading to WordPress 2.5.2 so that password resetting works correctly once again.

When a simple thing like password resetting breaks, it definitely makes me worried about the attention to detail the team is currently having. Maybe only two releases should be done a year, in six month cycles, also allowing for what will hopefully be more bug fix, security check time of each release before putting it out in the wild.

This definitely makes me even more adamant about moving to an environment where I can run Subversion to update all of my WordPress blogs. Are you getting tired of upgrading? How will you feel if you have to upgrade to WordPress 2.5.2 in a week?

RealWD Premium Themes and a Contest

With the ever growing market of quality WordPress themes it can be hard to filter out the noise and find a worthwhile theme to use for your projects, but a new advertiser here at Xfep might have the solution you are looking for.

RealWD has created two great WordPress themes with their RealWD Corporate and RealWD Elegante premium themes.

RealWD Corporate WordPress ThemeRealWD Corporate looks to me like it would work best for a business blog but especially for the smart make money online blogger, as it gives strong positions to recent posts, RSS subscriptions, and information about the site and author. It comes standard in a really nice blue, orange, grey and white colour scheme. It includes space for some large standard advertising sizes as well as some non-traditional ad positions that will work well with the design.

RealWD Elegante moves the meta data box to the bottom of the page, moving the posts higher up in the page. The colours are grey, red and beige, and seem to compliment each other well. It includes the 125×125 pixel advertising spaces that are very popular today, and has a strong sense of style.

Both themes are widget ready, and provide support for Gravatar. Both themes have also been tested in a myriad of web browsers and will work with WordPress 2.2 and above.

Out of the two, I would personally be more inclined to use the RealWD Corporate theme, but I always recommend users pick the theme that suits them the best.

Each theme is $75 and includes lifetime access to support, as well as being special in that for the $75 cost, the authors do not require you to retain any footer link, something that usually costs hundreds of dollars to remove in other premium themes.

The Contest

Interested in the themes, but don’t have the money to shell out currently? Link to the WordPress Themes page on RealWD (that’s www.realwd.com/wordpress-themes/) and comment here to let me know that you have linked to it with the URL of where I can find the link, and you will be entered into a contest to win one of the two themes.

Some ways to quickly earn opportunities to win:

  • Link to this post as well as the RealWD theme page: 5 entries
  • Link to RealWD’s theme page from a post on your blog relating to WordPress themes: 3 entries
  • Link to RealWD’s theme page from your sidebar or blogroll: 2 entries
  • Twitter the link to RealWD’s theme page: 1 entry

If you don’t comment here to let me know where I can find your entries, they won’t be counted. Enter now, as this contest will be over soon. The end date is May 6th, 2008. Prizes will be awarded on the 7th.

WordPress Theme: Pro Profile 1.1

It has come to my attention that the Pro Profile theme needed some changes, and so I spent the last little while going over it and making sure everything is correct, tighter, and smarter.

Pro Profile 1.1 WordPress Theme

One of the many things that needed correcting was the date display. For some odd reason, it wasn’t showing the year, and so that is now fixed on every instance I could see of the error.

Also, the header should now properly deal with site titles that are long, and the description of the site should be pulled from whatever you have it set as in the WordPress administration panel.

If you have previously downloaded Pro Profile 1.0, I ask you to please download this version, or you’ll have to go seek out the small changes I made in nearly every file and change the “o” in the date call, to a capital “Y” instead. And add the <?php bloginfo(‘description’); ?> to the header.php file replacing the put your description here text.

Download Pro Profile 1.1.

I have also been starting to get requests from people to get the header Photoshop file so they can create custom designs easily on top of the Pro Profile structure, and so I am happy to announce that it is now available for you to download separately.

Download Pro Profile Header PSD.

If you find any other errors, or have theme related questions, please let me know on my contact page or in the comments below.

WordPress Theme: Pro Profile 1.0

One thing I have been meaning to do, but haven’t recently is releasing more WordPress themes. This theme was designed and developed by Colour Light Studio for release here on Xfep.com.

It is a three column, widget ready theme with a really nice and simple look to it. One nice feature is the ability to allow users to select the colour set they feel comfortable with, and hopefully this will be something that all of you will take full advantage of in making new styles for the theme to be added to the set.

Pro Profile

I hope you will all check out the Pro Profile theme, and let me know what you think of it.

It is released under the Creative Commons Attribution License, with hope that you will keep the footer link on the theme.

To see a demo of what the theme is like, please check out the Pro Profile theme demo, and if you enjoy it, please download the Pro Profile theme.

If you are interested in the other theme I have released, check out the darker Crystal theme.

Update: The theme has been updated to version 1.1. The download link and demo have been updated, so feel free to click either to get the latest version. Check out the WordPress Theme: Pro Profile 1.1 post for details on what has changed.

WordPress Plugins: TopLinks and FriendsRoll

As you can most likely see, I have changed my sidebar. There is a new widget that stands out in it called TopLinks. It shows where I have been linking over the course of this blog and it sorts them by the number of times I have linked to them. I really enjoy the idea of this plugin as it shows you, my readers, where I get most of my news from, and it also gives kudos to those that I link to often.

TopLinks and FriendsRoll

FriendsRoll allows you to display a blogroll of sites requested by your readers. I could see this being used for spam purposes, but also as a great way to build a strong resource list. Again, another great way to give kudos to certain people as well. I’d much rather you all go check out my friends blogs like Tom’s blog, Leroux.ca, than one of my competitors.

I recently talked a bit about them on Blogging Pro, and I have to admit that there is a bit of a personal connection to these plugins. They are developed by 76design, a company in Ottawa that I almost ended up working for. I have huge respect for them, and I am super happy to see them applying their skills and talents to creating some useful and fun WordPress plugins.

The great thing is that they are still developing these plugins, which means if you have any questions, issues, concerns, you can let them know and they will be looked after. So add TopLinks and FriendsRoll to your blogs and let them know what you think.

Thanks to Joseph Thornley for talking about it on his blog, ProPr.

Best WordPress Themes: All from One Designer

What I am going to say is probably not going to be some people’s favourite thing to hear, but I believe that all the best designed WordPress themes come from one designer: Elena of Design Disease. I have worked with her for around two years now, and while she might not work with a grid or any of those other “designer” conventions, she works around advertising sizes, and has a special style that I am enamoured with.

Even if you just look at the free themes she has released for WordPress, I think you will be amazed at her work. While it isn’t always the most flexible for adding your own personal style, they are all very beautiful themes.

InSense is a two column design with rounded corners and a distinct blue colour scheme. It allows the user to switch from a narrow version to a wider version, but I think the narrow version has the better line width, and thus is easier to read.

InSense WordPress Theme

Illacrimo is a three column theme with another distinct blue colour scheme, this time the design is very different, though many of the elements are positioned the same. This is by far one of my favourite WordPress themes, though probably the most difficult to shift towards a personal preference design-wise.

Illacrimo WordPress Theme

Smashing Theme is a three column theme that has many of the same design elements and influence as Illacrimo, but this time with an orange colour scheme, and some very different graphics. It was created for Smashing Magazine, hence its name, and is very nice to look at. I like the way the different content sections in the first sidebar have different colours, and how icons are used very sparingly on this theme.

Smashing Theme

Gossip City, or really, Gossip City 2, since Elena didn’t like the first theme, and started again from scratch, is a three column, header heavy theme, that is much easier to modify than most of her other themes, as it keeps the content area very clean, using many less graphics than some of her other themes. The theme was created for the growing celebrity blog niche, and has become quite popular in that and other arenas.

Gossip City WordPress Theme

Christmas Days was Elena’s first attempt at a seasonal theme with blue, green and red combined, I think she really pulled off the feeling of Christmas. She had some interesting design challenges when finally releasing the theme to make sure that it was easy for anyone to just drop into their themes folder to use it right away without having to customize any images.

Christmas Days WordPress Theme

Dilectio is her most recent free theme is another one for Smashing Magazine, this time, the design is again mainly orange for its colour scheme, but has a very natural vine-like feel to it, as swirls of colour are everywhere in the design. It is three columns, and has a nice wide first sidebar for putting all sorts of content like your Flickr stream, about details, and recent posts and comments.

Dilectio WordPress Theme

Not only has Elena of Design Disease released all of these wonderful free themes, but she has also done numerous blog designs, including this one you see today on eXtra For Every Publisher. Another fine example of the type of WordPress theme design ability that Elena has. I am always amazed at her work, and I highly recommend everyone check out what she’s done.

Maybe you’ve seen all these themes before, but did you know they were all done by one designer? If you look through them, you can see her sense of design and style slowly shifting and evolving as she comes up with new designs. I am at the point now where I can usually tell how old a theme of hers is, just by the placement of certain key elements.

WordPress Plugin Security Issues

Over on Weblog Tools Collection, Jeffro recently posted about Dean’s Permalink Migration Plugin which has a bug that can allow an attacker to force a user to perform an unsolicited action to allow the attacker to gain valid credentials, or basically, have access to your blog.

While someone stepped up to the plate and released a new, fixed version after the original author couldn’t be contacted, it still brings up the issue of continued WordPress plugin security.

As WordPress moves closer to the new 2.5 release, due out this spring, will plugin authors that develop the plugins we have come to depend on continue to support and develop their work s that the community can continue to benefit, or will new plugin authors have to step in to fill that role?

Who is responsible for the security of the plugins created? When will the WordPress community demand a group of standards to help improve the security of both WordPress plugins and themes?

I hope this issue is dealt with long before the next major version of WordPress. And while I hate to give Automattic more power and control over the WordPress open source project, I do think that they are the best suited to step up and hire someone to organize and check over WordPress plugins submitted to the plugin directory on WordPress.org.

I want to make this clear though, I don’t think the person from Automattic should become responsible for security issues related to plugins, but another set of eyes, focused on finding security issues, could help save many blogs from issues down the road.

WordPress: Paying for Themes and Plugins?

A new friend of mine, Jamie Oaster, has brought up the issue of premium plugins and the potential business models surrounding them. WordPress is GPL software, and that means that plugins by proxy are supposed to all be released under GPL, as are all themes. This has severely limited the creation of a sustainable business model for themes and plugins that might have taken, days, weeks or even months to develop.

The basic premise of GPL is that everything created to use the GPL licensed code must also be released under GPL, which allows anyone to take the product you have created and re-distribute it. So if you charge $5 for a plugin, and someone buys it, they can then re-distribute it for free.

Jamie has a great article on Oaster.ca which covers all of these details and more and he is looking for some feedback on the whole thing. I have always been of the mind that plugins and themes should be excluded from the GPL since they are using hooks and template tags, rather than core WordPress PHP code, but unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

I also believe that WordPress has matured to the point where it could do well with some developers accountable for their work through being properly compensated for their time.

Head on over to Jamie’s post and leave your opinion.

The Basics of WordPress: Permalinks

What are they?

Permalinks are used as the permanent link to your post or page, most WordPress users like what are considered “clean” or “pretty” permalinks, where information is put in the link, such as the title of the post, or even the date. The default by WordPress is to use post numbers, but that doesn’t look very professional, nor does it help to easily identify a post or page.

By default you’ll see something like:
www.domainname.com/index.php?p=25

But this section will help you change that to:
www.domainname.com/2007/a-little-about-me/

WordPress uses the ?p=postnumber links because they work across all servers that meet WordPress’ requirements.

How to change them?

Log into your WordPress administration area, and go to Options, and then Permalinks. You will see some text, as well as a few options.

WordPress Permalinks

Included WordPress Options

WordPress makes changing permalinks very easy. By default, the default option, with the question mark and post number should be selected. Again, this isn’t a very good selection, as it doesn’t give any information about the post or page that the reader will be going to.

Next there is date and name based. This is one that I have used for a long time, though search engine experts sometimes say that the articles look like they are too deep within a directory structure to the search engines, but it is still one of my favorite options.

Thirdly, there is numeric. Much like the default option, having numeric post URLs doesn’t lend much information about the article.

Lastly, there is an option to set a custom structure. This is the option most used, at least in my recent experience. It allows you to create your own structure for your blog, using the built-in structure tags from WordPress.

One of the most common custom structure I see is /%postname%/ which will make it so that all your posts are www.domain.com/postname/. This makes it very easy to recognize articles, as well as share links to your blog posts, and it is said to have the most search engine benefit.

I am still a fan of at least having the year before my post name, so that people can instantly tell how old an article is, but others tell me that great articles are timeless. If you want the year before your post name, the custom structure that you would use is /%year%/%postname%/.

WordPress 2.4 Administration Panel Preview

When WordPress 2.4 comes out on January 24th, the first thing pretty much everyone will notice is a brand new WordPress Admin panel design. The user interface side of things doesn’t appear to have changed much, but there is a huge graphical change, and some minor new features. For taking a small moves approach to developing WordPress, this one is sure to create all kinds of buzz in the coming weeks.

I took it upon myself to download the latest WordPress nightly and install it to see how the new design was coming along, and after getting it set up, I went and recorded a quick screencast for Tubetorial.

Hope you all enjoy it, and let me know what you think. So far, the response to the video has been positive, but the response to the new administration panel design has been mixed. It should be interesting to see what everyone thinks on the 24th when it’s finally released.

Note: The design has NOT yet been fully implemented in the nightlies, and is only 10-20% complete. I want to make this clear, as it seems many haven’t realized this and have begun criticizing it.
