Before its current incarnation, it was a private, invite only forum that had membership at the upper echelons of blogging in their respective niches. I got invited thanks to David Krug (just so you know why I was there).

Hive is a forum that I really enjoy. People share freely of their ideas, and for the most part, we are all secure in knowing that our ideas are safe, and the group keeps each other in check.

The amazing part of being in Hive is the networking connections I have made, without which I would probably be homeless by now. There are some seriously amazing people that are members of Hive and I have learned so much.

There are even private reports just for Hive members that help us with building authority, creating successful blogs, link building and more.

The forum is $10 per month, but that is to keep those that would leech off of the community or spam from entering, and it has been working just as intended. Hive is an honest, open, sharing community of bloggers, web developers, consultants, graphic designers, programmers and more who are all willing to help each other out.

Hive does have an affiliate program, but I feel so strongly that you all should become members, I won’t use my affiliate link, thus taking away any incentive you might accuse me of. Please, if you think this forum sounds right for you, join today.

I recently posted about my excitement of seeing this blog reach the one thousand comments mark, and I wanted to go back and highlight a few things which I think could help bloggers figure out what seems to work, and what doesn’t.

My Problogging Setup – 23 Comments
Best Blogs Period – 19 Comments

From the list above you can see that list posts have done well for me, and that creating something new has done the best. WordPress themes are still a great way to gain attention, as well as pointing out your favourite sites. I also recommend mini-contests with a very low barrier for entry, as they seem to inspire people to both comment, and to link to your blog. The lower the barrier for entry, the more entries you will get. My recent domain giveaway doesn’t follow this rule, but I think the prizes are worth a bit of extra effort.

Another interesting statistic that I have found on this blog is that around 50% of all my comments come from the same handful of people. This means that they interact with this site on a fairly regular basis or did at one time. It also shows that, at least on this blog, if they come back and comment more than once, they seem to come back fairly often, or give their opinions on a variety of posts.

I am unsure if some are just hoping for traffic benefits as many of the repeat comments come from people authoring blogs in a similar niche, but I enjoy the regulars that come back more than once, despite knowing they are most likely ad blind or not clicking on ads.

I don’t have a plugin installed right now to tell me how many comments the “most commented” user has, but I would hazard a guess that it is Tom, a friend of mine from Ottawa who currently has 42 comments on this blog.

A side note for those that are interested, comments appear to have dropped considerably since I have stopped pushing my posts on social media sites. So that means my Alexa and Technorati Ranks as well as comments per month are all down since I stopped heavy promotion of this blog.

Traveling across the country to attend Northern Voice was a lot of fun. I even got to hold my own session about being a network backed blogger, giving tips to people about how I got into the industry, and giving out advice, suggestions and tips to help them. I expected a whole two or three people to show up, and I was given the smallest room for my speech. Of course nearly three dozen people ended up showing up. It was really great, and I hope to speak more often at events.

The biggest effect though of attending a conference is the lethargic time of healing after the event is complete. I am currently trying to get my brain wrapped around everything I learned, all the great people I met, and all the traveling I had to do.

Next time, I think I am going to stay put for a few extra days to adjust better before jetting back to home.

I will have tons more on the conference, the people, and pictures I took over the next few days.

If you know someone is taking the ideas behind each one of your posts, and then rewriting them to publish on their own blog, how would you feel about that? How would you deal with it? It is something I have recently noted on a blog I used to really like. It seems as I write articles on here, sometime a week or two later, an original article with the same topic shows up on the other blog.

At first, I thought it was just coincidence, but it just happened again. A post I had written less than a week ago has been written from scratch and put on a blog more popular than this one.

While I do like being a source for ideas, I don’t like how this person is going about it. I really don’t know how I feel over this whole thing. They aren’t copying my article text. They aren’t linking back to me, but they are using my posts to come up with their post topics.

Am I a victim of the huge echo chamber of the web?

While I know there is nothing I can do about this whole thing, and I should probably try to be pleased that they think so highly of me, it can be really hard for me to come up with post ideas, and while I can’t say that I have never taken a post idea from someone else’s blog, I usually try to stick to their long ago archives, while this person is taking less than a week to basically repurpose my ideas.

It is a very strange feeling. I would love to hear what my readers think about all of this. And if the person “stealing my ideas” reads this, I wonder if they even realize they are doing it?

Note: They aren’t copying my posts, but instead taking the general idea of my post and re-writing them from scratch. None of my content is being stolen… just every post idea I have that appeals to their audience. I don’t know if that changes anything for anyone, but I wanted to make sure everyone understood that fact.

I look forward to seeing how things turn out for everyone, but right now, I wanted to give a quick plea to my readership. I am currently one of the options for best new blog of 2007, and I would love to come in first or second place, and so if you have some time, could you please give me a quick vote?

So thus far in December, it has been a slow month for Make Money Online blog sales, but Smart Wealthy Rich is changing all that, as the blog goes up for sale.

A lot of things. Most of you already know I started a multi-author blog a couple months ago, thing are going really good. That’s keeping me very busy. And I’ve also been very busy designing and customizing blogs, and building my portfolio site, which is not yet fully functional but should be soon (I have no idea how it looks like in IE, I’m still working on it, but it should look ok in FireFox).

And I’m also spending a lot of time in the recording studio with my band working on some cool guitar licks In fact starting January we will most likely start doing more shows and release our album and 3 of our songs will be up on Itunes in about a month from now. So that too is keeping me busy.

So all of this means less time for this blog (SWR), unfortunately.

I guess you see where I’m getting at with all this.

Yes, SmartWealthyRich is for sale. This is my first blog, and I’m really sad to have to let it go, but I’m sure you folks want more than 1-2 posts per month.

So far, there hasn’t been any information on what the site would go for, as he hasn’t openly listed the site on SitePoint or any other auction site as of yet, asking instead for private offers, which will hopefully mean the right person will be taking over the blog, rather than the highest paying.

Check out all the details at Smart Wealthy Rich, and enjoy Jon’s new site, Freelance Folder.

This is a report of my travel to the nextMEDIA conference in Toronto. Full coverage of this event can be found on a variety of sites, but I will be linking all the posts from the Splashpress Blog.

Getting up early wasn’t a real issue, though I didn’t sleep well the night before the conference, feeling a little like a child waiting for Christmas, when the alarm went off at nearly five in the morning, I leapt from the bed and started my final preparations to go.

The train boarded just before departure time, and being awake at six thirty in the morning started to feel really early. In two hours I would be in Toronto, and walking towards the conference. I would miss breakfast, but I am not a big breakfast eater anyways.

Going to nextMEDIA in Toronto is rather exciting for me because I am still new to the conference scene. A friend of mine online let me know that going to conferences would get old as I continued to travel around, but I enjoy traveling, despite not taking the time to enjoy each place.

Like this Toronto trip. I got up at five in the morning to go, and I will be coming home tomorrow right after the conference is finished. I could have probably arranged to stay another day, but my wife would miss me too much or at least that is what I like to believe.

I also try to find the least expensive ways to attend events, while I believe going to conferences is a valuable experience, being in what amounts to a startup environment compels me to try to be as inexpensive as possible with such trips so that we can allocate money for more important things, like my monthly pay.

One thing I am glad about though is that I am not taking the bus. I am so sick of traveling by bus, so the train is a welcome change. This will be my fourth major conference since I started blogging and so far, each conference I have attended has been better than the last. I will have more on if nextMedia continues that trend, though I think Mesh Conference in Toronto will be very hard to beat.

As we slowly shuffle forward in the train, the snow is getting thicker and thicker, until we hit the metropolis of Toronto, with its heavy pollution, and thus no snow.

I am very happy I brought my laptop on this trip, and while I didn’t take advantage of the expensive WiFi on the train, ($10 for 24 hours, $4 for 15 minutes) the multimedia on my laptop was more than sufficient to keep me entertained for the two hour train ride. Even better, they have power outlets for laptops on the train, which allow me to not run my battery down.

I am still slowly waking up, and already the conference doors have swung open by now for the breakfast eat-in. It’s a shame I am not already there, as during the Norther Voice conference in Vancouver last year, the breakfast was a great time to meet people.

Thankfully, I will be arriving before the opening speech. I hope to see James Cogan early on in the conference as having a friendly face nearby provides a fair bit of confidence in meeting people, while also giving a safety net when you just want to relax and enjoy some sessions.

Conferences are a thousand times better when you have someone there with you. I highly recommend bloggers and blog networks send two people to conferences.

As I get ready for the nextMEDIA conference in Toronto, I have been slowly going over the list of companies and speakers that are attending, and I am getting really excited. The caliber of people making this conference great, are the upper echelons of the online who’s who, and I am excited to be attending and listening to them talk.

Here are just a small sampling of people that will be there:

Leonard Brody, CEO, Now Public

David Carson, Co-CEO, Heavy.com

Joe Casale, CEO, Casale Media Inc.

Mathew Ingram, Technology Columnist, The Globe & Mail

Will Pate, Community Evangelist, ConceptShare

Bryan Segal, Senior Director, Comscore Media Metrix

Dick Soule, Head of International Sales, YouTube

While I have seen Will Pate at a few events in Canada, I hope that this time I get a chance to speak to him. I also hope to have a chance to talk to Mathew Ingram, a great guy with an interesting job. I am actually a little nervous to be going to such a conference, though I have a feeling that I am still not well known enough to get “noticed”.

I remember when I went to my first web-related conference, one person recognized the company I worked for and called me “the guy that works for the guy that bought Scrivs’ sites”.

I hope to see some friendly faces, and I hope the event goes well. How can anyone get sick of going to conferences?
