Traffic from the Inner Bowels of b5media

So it seems someone has linked to this site from the secret forums for b5media’s bloggers. I don’t know if they are saying good things or bad things about me or this site, but it is interesting to see a small trickle of traffic coming from there.

I have always been a curious person, and I really dislike when there are walls blocking my way, either from being part of a community, or seeing what people are saying about me.

So if you are from the b5media forums, and saw the link to this site, can you let me know what is being said about this blog? Does someone think this is all drivel? I’d be interested to get feedback.

For those of you that don’t know, b5media is a blog network with hundreds of blogs, and hundreds of bloggers. They recently recruited a good friend of mine Tris Hussey.

Update: Looks like they are looking at my 15 Amazing Women in Blogging post. It has gotten a fair bit of attention both negative and positive. b5media has some amazing women in their team, both on and off my little, incomplete list.

I want to mention again that the list was supposed to be a positive thing. I am not sexist, nor do I think women are any less amazing than men at blogging. The point of the post was to highlight a few great women, in hopes of raising awareness for a friend of mine, who was annoyed that Mark’s 45n5.com Top 100 list was dominated by men.

Domain Giveaway Contest Results

So, a few days ago I decided to giveaway two of my Nintendo Wii related domains. I kept the contest quiet, so that people that read this blog would have the best chance of winning, and not someone from one of those crazy contest blogs that have popped up.

I had four entries into the contest, and I am happy with that. To me, it means 50% of those who entered will win something.

For the first domain, WiiStart.com, the winner is Stephen.
For the second domain, WiiWe.com, the winner is Todd Morris.

I will be contacting you guys via e-mail about transferring the domains. Thanks again to all that entered. I hope to run some more small contests like this for the sake of my readership, rather than the masses at large.

Do You Post Enough?

One issue I have been having lately, with my job pulling me in all sorts of directions is making sure to post enough on the blogs I am part of. I didn’t think that posting regularly on all those blogs would be that difficult. When I first started blogging full time, I was writing on nearly a dozen sites, posting over a dozen posts a day, but each and every article was fairly low quality.

Now, with all the work I do for Splashpress Media, I sometimes don’t feel like I have enough time to spend on crafting articles. So now my posting speed has gone down, and my quality is fairly low, and so that brings up the question of posting routines and whatnot. Do you post on your blog enough? And if you do, is the quality as high as you would like it to be?

The really funny part about this whole post is that I almost want to start another blog for a subject I am interested in.

Conferences in 2008

I am really looking forward to attending a wider variety of conferences in 2008, as I slowly get my bearings with Splashpress Media, and continue to be part of the blogging community, it seems like attending conferences is what I should be doing. I would love to speak on some panels as well as maybe even doing some small presentations of my own, but thus far, I haven’t really found my “in” or groove in that respect.

I haven’t planned out which conferences I am going to as of yet. Some things are still up in the air in regards to attending some in the US, among other places, but I would love to hear about the conferences and events you all are excited about, especially those relating to blogging.

A Much Needed Break

So after some really great pushes to get a lot of content out, I decided to reward myself with a longer than normal break from blogging on here, and it is understandable why, planning my holidays.

Soon, I am hoping to take a trip to visit my family and what that means is all will be quite in the blogosphere, and to me this is a good thing. People should be spending time with their families.

The hard part is always watching those traffic stats go down in December, but thankfully, I was on the Digg front page for twenty minutes before being buried, and it helped push my traffic beyond last month’s levels, and so I am fairly content how December played out, and I hope to rest, relax and revitalize before pushing out some great content in the new year.

That doesn’t mean you won’t see more posts from me to finish out the month, but understand that things are going to be slow from now until January 2nd.

And in case I forget to say it later, I hope all my readers have a happy and safe holiday season. I need you to all come back in the new year to continue making eXtra For Every Publisher a success.

The Basics of WordPress: Welcome to WordPress

Logging In

WordPress LoginGetting to your WordPress login screen is easy, as the file that is the login page is wp-login.php and can be found by typing in the URL of your blog, then forward slash, and finally wp-login.php.
e.g. www.testblog.com/wp-login.php

I usually bookmark the actual administration page (www.testblog.com/wp-admin/), so that if I am already logged in, I get right to the WordPress Dashboard, where I can view a variety of things going on with my blog.

This is all about your preference. Some themes have links to the login page, and others don’t, so you will have to decide what the easiest way for you to get logged in so that you can manage your blog efficiently.

Changing User Options

When you log in for the first time, it brings you directly to the user page, where you can change your password, and add more information about yourself. Unless you are really good at remembering random passwords, I suggest you at least change the password to something easier. Make sure it is a strong password with letters and numbers for security purposes.

Edit User Options

This is also a good time to add things like your first and last name, the nickname you want, as well as selecting what you want your display name to be. Most themes for WordPress show off who wrote the post, and your display name is what it will show.

Pages versus Posts

WordPress doesn’t do much to distinguish between pages, and posts, but for you it is important to remember that pages are designed to be on their own, outside the normal post loop. So the date of a page doesn’t matter, and usually, but not always, pages don’t have comment areas.

Pages allow you to show off static content. I usually use pages to show off different details, like an about page, and a contact page. This allows you to use WordPress as more than just blogging software.

Editing a Page

To edit a page, it is a simple matter, just like editing a post. Once in the administration area, click on Manage, and then Pages. This will lead you to an area that lists all your pages. From here you can click edit or delete, depending on what you need to do.

Manage Pages

Sub Pages and Parent Pages

Having a system of organization for pages is made simple in WordPress by creating a sub-page and parent page model. Let’s say you had a page called Family, and under that, you wanted to create a page for each family member, you could then assign each family member’s page to use the main Family page as the parent, giving you an easy to see and understand structure

Linking to a Page

WordPress is able to generate a list of pages on your site which can be put in the header or sidebar of your blog using a template tag called wp_list_pages().

You can also link to pages in a variety of different places, including in other pages and posts. It is a simple HTML link, and depending on if you have permalinks set up or not, you’ll link to the location of the page in a different way.

For example, if you want an about page listed in your sidebar, that link might look like:
<a title=”About Me” href=”/?page_id=14″>About Me</a>
if you do not have Permalinks set up, or
<a title=”About Me” href=”/about-me/”>About Me </a>
if you do have Permalinks set up.

The page id being the ID listed under Manage Pages.

Note: Your .htaccess file must be writable for page permalinks to work, otherwise you must manually update your .htaccess file every time you make a major change.

Domain Giveaway Contest: Nintendo Wii Related Domains

So I have decided to run a little Christmas contest here on this blog, and the prize is one of two Nintendo Wii related domains. While it might be too late to set up a site to capitalize on the Christmas season, Nintendo Wii shortages continue, and that is something that could definitely be capitalized on.

The domains are WiiWe.com and WiiStart.com. They are both currently registered at Godaddy. Neither of these have been used for anything else, and are both very short and memorable.

To participate, all you have to do is link to Xfep.com from a new post, comment here with the URL of the post that links to eXtra for Every Publisher and then list which domain you’d like to have.

You will be put in a list, I will filter out sub-par results, and then the rest will be given a number and put to Randomizer.org to decide.

The winning post will be mentioned on this site, and the domain will be transferred over. With my years of expertise in domain appraisal, the value of these domains are both in the millions of dollars.

Contest Ends December 21st, at Noon EST (GMT-5).

15 Amazing Women in Blogging

A little while back someone said to me that blogging is a “man’s game”, and with people like John Chow, Darren Rowse and many other guys sitting in the upper echelons of blogging celebrity, at first I had to agree with her. I told her that the sex of the blogger had nothing to do with how successful or unsuccessful a blogger might be.

I then made it my mission to compile a list of some absolutely amazing women in blogging. Some of the following ladies blog for themselves, others blog for a network, and a few even run their own blog network. All in all, there are some amazingly talented women making their mark on the blogosphere.

While I may have numbered all of the following amazing ladies, this list is not in any order.

Every Penny Counts Approach to Making Money Online

One of the mistakes I see most bloggers making early on is trying to stick to things that give them the biggest pay out. Unfortunately, certain referral and affiliate programs might have high rates, but horrible conversion, and widening your net to include smaller paying programs might get more conversions and end up making you more money in the end.

Darren Rowse recently covered this on his blog where a reader asks why he linked to a product using an affiliate link when the money made on each sale was to be less than five dollars.

What we, as readers, quickly realize is simple: every penny counts.

Darren was able to make over two hundred dollars in one day, from a variety of affiliate programs and product referrals that each paid out small amounts, but together, made a real difference in his earnings. If he was able to replicate that result, each and every day, pushing a fair number of sales to a large number of less expensive products, he would make six thousand dollars in a month.

It was counter-intuitive to how I thought of making money online, but his site is proof positive that just because a product only pays you a few dollars per conversion, doesn’t mean it is worthless, as it could convert quite well.
